Sand Control Screen Standards: API & ISO
API 15LE, API 19SS, ISO 17824, NACE MR0175, and DIN 4935 govern sand control screens. What each standard requires and when it applies to your specification.

Sand control well screens for oil and gas applications are governed by an interlocking set of industry standards. Each addresses a different aspect of the screen, from raw material traceability through final mechanical testing. Operators and EPC contractors typically reference multiple standards in a single purchase specification.
API 5CT and API 15LE -- Base pipe specifications
For pipe-based sand control screens, the base pipe (perforated structural pipe inside the wire wrap) is procured to API 5CT (casing and tubing grades L80, P110, and similar) or, for some applications, API 15LE for polyethylene-lined pipe. These standards define pipe dimensions, material chemistry, mechanical testing, hydrostatic testing, and full mill traceability before the pipe is perforated and wire-wrapped.
API 19SS -- Sand control well screens
API 19SS is the dedicated sand control screen specification. It covers:
Materials: base pipe, wire wrap, and end connections must come from qualified sources with full traceability. Slot width tolerance: typical plus or minus 0.001 inch (0.0254 mm) for slots up to 0.020 inch, plus or minus 5 percent for larger slots. Mechanical testing: axial load capacity, collapse pressure, and burst pressure verified on representative samples per lot. End connections: thread type, dimensional accuracy, pressure rating per the operator specification. Quality management: manufacturer must operate a documented QMS (typically aligned with ISO 9001) with traceability records linking each screen to its raw material, manufacturing parameters, and test results.
API 19SS is published jointly with ISO 17824 and the two standards are essentially equivalent for sand control screen specification.
ISO 17824 -- International sand control screen standard
ISO 17824 is the international equivalent of API 19SS and the two are published in alignment. ISO 17824 is preferred in operator specifications outside North America, while API 19SS is the more common reference for US-based projects and EPC contracts. A screen manufactured to API 19SS is generally compliant with ISO 17824 and vice versa, with the same testing and documentation requirements.
NACE MR0175 / ISO 15156 -- Sour service materials
NACE MR0175 (also published as ISO 15156) specifies materials qualified for hydrogen sulfide (H2S) service in upstream oil and gas equipment. The standard:
Defines the operating envelope of H2S partial pressure, temperature, and chloride concentration for each qualified material. Limits material hardness to prevent sulfide stress cracking (SSC). Specifies allowable alloy compositions and heat treatment conditions. Requires hardness testing on welded zones, not just base material.
Any screen specified for sour service must meet NACE MR0175 / ISO 15156. Common qualified materials include Duplex 2205, Super Duplex 2507, and Inconel 625 and 825 within their respective envelopes. Documentation includes MTR, hardness reports, and a NACE compliance certificate.
DIN 4935 -- Slot tolerance reference
DIN 4935 is a German industrial standard for filter element slot tolerances. While not specific to oil and gas, it is referenced as the slot tolerance benchmark in some European screen specifications and serves as a useful manufacturing reference for tight-tolerance applications. ADEN screens meet or exceed DIN 4935 slot tolerance.
How standards interact in a typical specification
A typical sand control screen purchase order references:
- API 19SS (or ISO 17824) for overall manufacturing, slot tolerance, and mechanical testing.
- API 5CT or API 15LE for base pipe material (when pipe-based construction is used).
- NACE MR0175 / ISO 15156 for material qualification in sour service.
- EN 10204 Type 3.1 for material test reports.
- Customer-specific or company specifications layered above the industry standards (for example: Saudi Aramco SAES, ExxonMobil GP, Total Specifications).

Material test report (MTR) per EN 10204 Type 3.1 with full heat traceability. Certificate of conformity confirming dimensions, slot aperture, and drawing compliance. Weld procedure documentation (WPS / PQR) on request.
Documentation packages can be provided in multiple languages on request, but English is the default for international projects.
